If I seek righteousness, what of it? First of all, what is righteousness? Second, why should one seek righteousness? Lastly, what are the rewards of righteousness? To start, righteousness can be defined by understanding or contrasting what it is and what it is NOT. Righteousness is doing what is right according to God’s standards. It is:
- conforming to His Will.
- compliance to God’s precepts in this earthly life.
- the continuation, in life, of seeking God to do acts that will bring honor to Him.
- the striving to do what is right, in private and in public view.
- the practice of obedience to God.
Why Righteousness
The scripture says that no one who is born of God can deliberately and habitually practice sin. Apostle Paul defined in the scriptures, Romans 7: 7-10, what it means to practice sin. Sin is the opposite of righteousness. Disobedience is sin. Even as a child, you have an inner consciousness that lets you know right from wrong. The law of God identifies wrongdoings as ‘sinful.’ Once you accept Christ as your personal Saviour, you have a new birth. Immediately, the Holy Spirit becomes available to assist you in your new way of life.
Transformation to Righteousness
This new birth is a transformation that takes place inwardly. The Holy Spirit takes up residence within you; His purpose is to teach and guide you – to do what is right. Even the more, you become a part of the entire fellowship of other believers -it is the body of Christ. This spiritual transformation sets you apart from your previous actions. Your character changes because you are not controlled by sin. Now, because of your transformation, your priority is to seek God for your actions. You listen for the voice of God to follow and be obedient to His Will. Your decision to repent and accept Christ as your Savior means you pass from death to Life! Obeying God is the way you now choose to live. That is why sometimes, you are viewed as strange because of how you operate; yet, God is one of order.
What are the Rewards of Righteousness
PEACE, ADVOCATE, AND ETERNAL REST!!!
1. A New Mindset – Your thought processes changes. And we speak about these things, not with words taught us by human wisdom, but with those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people (1 Corinthians 2:13 NET). Let this mind be in me that is in Christ Jesus.
2. Christ Jesus, Becomes Your Advocate – Jesus is your advocate. He will send the angels to take care of you, to take charge over you, Hebrews 1. He will help you go through your trials and tribulations. The peace of God goes beyond human understanding. His love and joy sustain you in the storm.
3. A Greater Reward – You have a greater reward in heaven because of righteousness. The scripture in 1 Corinthians 2:9 (New English Translation (NET) tells you, “But just as it is written, “Things that no eye has seen, or ear heard, or mind imagined, are the things God has prepared for those who love him.” In the same way, God works in captivity.
Likewise, you become an intercessor for the body of Christ. So,
Dear God,
You will teach me how to walk in Your love and honor Your name. Thank you that I will operate as a Servant of God in deeds and words by Your Holy Spirit. I pray this prayer also for the brothers and sisters of faith, in the name of Jesus.
