Psalm 121 is known as a Song of degrees or a Song of Ascents. It was one of the songs sung by pilgrims as they ascended to Jerusalem. It was a song of encouragement as they sojourned. How relevant is this psalm to us today? Everything we take for granted shifts to a place of uncertainty. Still, the Word of God stands – that the Lord is our keeper.
A Helper in Our Circumstances
Verses one and two remind us about who our helper is in all situations that befall us. It tells us what we are to keep in the forefront of our minds. It is a reminder to lift our eyes unto our helper. Our helper is God. Before you become discouraged and get to a place of despair, think about the divine help we have. This help is assigned to us as Kingdom citizens and children of the highest God. The Lord is our keeper.
God the Keeper Provides
Remind yourself by reflecting and giving thanks. Moreover, when you reflect on the Word of God, you see several examples in the Old and New Testament. God shows up as a provider in these examples. For Abraham, God had a ram in the bush, Genesis 22:13. God sent the prophet Elijah to the widow woman in Zarephath. She had one meal left to cook. Elijah asked her to provide him with that meal in the midst of famine. In the end, her obedience leads to provision in the midst of a famine [1 Kings 17:8- 15].
Even the more, for the children of Israel, He sent Moses to lead in their deliverance from Pharaoh [Exodus 5:1]. Even in the midst of being put to death for disobedience to the King, the three Hebrew boys are spared when God send an angel in the furnace with them [Daniel 3:23-25]. Thirdly, when Lazarus lay dead in the tomb, it was Christ who summoned him to come forth [John 11:43-44]. God preserves from that time and forevermore.
Help is a Promise
For instance, when the lights and or the water were off, did someone pay it for you? That is God. When the doctor states that they can’t do anything more for you, and you are healed in the long run, this is God! Perhaps you know of someone who sat in an exam room. The answers began to come together to resolve your issue. Clarity came. That is God! Can you not understand that five people interviewed for the same position as you, and you got the job. Seemingly, you are the one with the shortest Curriculum Vitae. You do not have the recommendation from the right person. Yet, you still got the job. That is God. Do you recall a way made for you out of no way? You are unable to explain how or why. Do you think that it is not God?
Situations are Not New
Finally, as you pilgrimage through life in this post-pandemic season, remember the words of verses one and two. Political unrest and a revelatory understanding of the racial divide among nations are present. Did not the pilgrims declare in Psalm 121 that God will lift you up? Is not God the keeper and the provider? Did He not come before to help? Is He not able to come again? Encourage yourself as you continue to pray. Praise the one and only God, your helper. The Lord is our keeper.
