Leadership Lessons from History: We Three Kings

This blog post is about three kings: Asa, Jehoshaphat, and Hezekiah. Their encounter with God as leaders is still revelant in this season.

First, it is God who grants power. God does this for the good of those who chooses to follow Him. God sets up and takes down kingdoms, kings and rulers (Jeremiah 1:10). Yes, God has all authority in earth, below the earth, and above the heavens. He gives authority to whom He pleases (Romans 13:1).

Asa

Asa’s story is one of reform and disobedience. In the book of 2 Chronicles, chapter 14, we meet him as King Asa of Judah. What a magnificent beginning of doing what right! At the start of his reign, because of Asa’s obedience to God, the people enjoyed peace from war with surrounding nations. Even after ten years of rest, in the time of war, the nation experienced victory. One example is war against the Ethiopians, an army of a million fighters. In contrast, Asa’s warriors only totaled five hundred and eighty thousand. In the face of this opposition, Asa’s prayer (one of my personally favorite prayers) to God was:

“Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name, we go against this multitude. O Lord, you are God; do not let man prevail against You!”

Yet, the Scriptures tell another story about Asa. His reliance and faith changed from God to another king: King Ben-Hadad of Syria (2 Chronicles 16:1-4) This alliance cost Judah their victory. Even in the time of sickness, Asa did not seek God (2 Chronicles 16:11-14).

Jehoshaphat

Jehoshaphat, Asa’s son, became king after his father’s death. The Bible describes King Jehoshaphat as a king of faith before God. In his heart, was a delight in seeking the ways of the Lord. In all his good works, the willingness to compromise with an ungodly king (Ahab) was a choice.

First, was the allowance of a marriage between his eldest son to the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel (ungodly family of Baal worshippers). The convincing of Ahab to Jehoshaphat that “I am, as you are,” did override Jehoshaphat’s faith and God’s warning (2 Chronicles18:28).

Yet, because God is the judge, His decision is one of a merciful father in that in battle, Jehoshphat’s life was protected. Not so for Ahab and his son, even though they wore disguises. Because God did find good things in Jehoshaphat, mercy was given to him. The reforms of repentance to be faithful as God’s people, once again, blessed the nation of Judah.

Hezekiah

Hezekiah’s story and his relationship with the prophet of Isaiah is most familiar. From the beginning, King Hezekiah did what was right in the eyesight of God, quite different from his father King Ahaz. His devotion and worship of God was seem as loving as that of King David. In this way, there was flourishing and great worship of God within the nation. The people learned about forgiveness and repentance. Hezekiah’s whole-hearted reforms were a blessing in Judah (2 Chronicles 29:1-2; 2 Chronicles 31:20-21).

Unfortunately, Hezekiah, too, did succumb to his own imperfection of pride. Although it is God who delivered the people from the hands of their enemies, Hezekiah became prideful in the sight of God. It was the favor of God which allowed Hezekiah to prosper and overcome ungodly enemies of God (Assyrian Empire of idol worship). Even after Hezekiah repented and God extended his life, Hezekiah, once again, became a prideful showoff (2 Kings 20:12-13).

Speak Lord

God cannot allow unrighteousness. He is the judge of all. He is always speaking; God is always working. Leadership is important. No matter the dominion, i.e., home, places of worship, workplaces or nations, rightful leadership is what please God.

From the very beginning, God’s decision to give man limited authority (dominion) was in the power of His leadership. Giving His creation (male and female) leadership in the earth realm was under God’s authority. Yet, God’s love is evidence of how He deals with disobedience. Clearly, Adam did misuse that power. Adam’s decision to be disobedient to God, was a choice. Because of Adam’s decision, sin was introduced into this world. Ever since, there is a battle between powers given to Satan and humankind.

It is a mistake for any person (including a ruler, king, or official) to think that God’s voice is silent. The purpose is clear: “Leading with compassion, love, humbleness, and faith toward God is how you are successful. Careless and unrepenting leadership is deadly. God speaks!

Identifying Common Challenges Faced by Servant Leaders

We enter into this world, crying out to be served. As babies and young children, our needs are dependent upon others. Servant Leadership style differs. Yes, Servant Leadership is not easy because it is not about your being “first.” You are not the one to be served; rather, you are the first to serve others. Servant leadership is a change of the heart.

As a matter in fact, this type of leadership has to be an intentional mission (goal) for the vision given. Above all, servant leadership is a personal calling; yielding; it is not a placement position. That is the first challenge to face as a servant leader – accepting a calling greater than self.

Another challenge that faces the servant leader is the “repositioning of self” for the calling. Repositioning self is a mental, physical, and spiritual position to conquer authorized territory. The servant leader is a foreigner in strange territory. Yet, one has the calling and authority to walk in and take the territory. It is spiritual warfare.

Moreover, do not expect others to understand this calling. Because it is given to the servant leader, opposition persists. Wisdom and discernment come through prayer, meditation, and fasting. Even when the servant of God conquers the territory, one must maintain it for the benefit of others that you serve.

Practical Solutions for Overcoming Leadership Challenges

Examples of common challenges in serving others first and repositioning of self comes from external and internal pressures. Three common ones are:

  • Communication issues
  • Lack of natural resources
  • Untrained people

Communication

Good communication is a strategy. It is a learning process, and experience is a good teacher. From experiences, I share with you:

  • Be willing to develop good listening skills. More listening, less talking to people.
  • Be observant of your surroundings. Who are the communicators in your surrounding? Are these the key people who others listen to most often and not you?
  • Body language is a great communicator. Eyes, movement, twitches, hands, etc. Be mindful of its value in communicating, especially in different environments.
  • Be sensitive to others’ personal space and respect it.
  • Ensure that the physical environment differentiate as resting spaces and working spaces. This is a great way to serve others for areas of rebounding and re-energizing. The environment communicates to outsiders as well. It speaks to what you value the most.

Lack of natural resources

For the servant leader, the “Complaint Department” does not exist. The servant leader turns that department to a place of Transformative Operations. Therefore, the highly skilled servant sees a lack of resources as opportunities to transform lack to abundance. How?

  • Identify partnerships for the season of now for the immediate purpose
  • Build trustful relationships for ongoing supply chains
  • Assess the physical layout. Who are the custodians of the physical infrastructure? Usually, they are the ones who have certain keys for your access into specific areas. Treat them with the respect they deserve. They are the true operations managers.

Untrained people

Just because people lack training, this does not mean that they are not useful. This is an opportunity to help members acquire the skills. People have a skill set from life. So:

  • Identify current skills and experiences
  • Commit to conversations to build and improve members’ skill level
  • Identify ongoing training needs
  • Incorporate a reward system that validates members’ successes and value to the team

The Role of Faith in Navigating Leadership Obstacles

Reflectively, I view reposition of self as a constant walk of faith in Christ. For we are not here is to be the first served; rather, we are the first to serve others.

Evaluating Your Growth and Progress as a Servant Leader

Moreover, the scripture reminds us that only what we do for Christ will last (1 Corinthians 3:12-14). In the natural world, we often create instruments for the purpose of measuring growth. Such is the purpose of pre and post assessments in goal setting.

Spiritually, we know that only God’s measurement that will stand. However, our hearts are a reflection of who we are. It is because of our human condition that God gives to us mercy. It is the law that establishes a “stick” of measure. Without the law, how would we know that a violation occurred? The laws of God exist for giving us knowledge about the commandments of God.

Internally, when we accept Christ, the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) comes to teach and guide. Paul said a war occurs. The human spirit wants what is contrary to the Holy Spirit. With compassion and love, God renders to us his favor. Outwardly, is what we now produce – a leadership as His servant and friend.

Progress

The list below are examples from the Scriptures. These are growth areas in which you function, for the Holy Spirit is your teacher. You:

  • Operate in the commandment of love (Luke 6:27; Matthew 5:38-48). In other words, you are learning to treat others the way you want others to treat you.
  • Willingly keep watch as a shepherd (1 Peter 5:2-3).
  • Are able to readily answer questions about hope (1 Peter 13-16)
  • Are to stay strong in faith; do what brings honor to God (1 Peter 11)
  • Stay away from idols (1 John 5:21)
  • Keep building (Jude, verse 20)

God gives the increase of the affairs concerning us because of the desire to please Him. This is why we will overcome challenges as servants of God.

What is Forbid?

The meaning of the word forbid is “to refuse to allow.”  What an action word!  Only six letters and yet it has consequences.  If I can forbid you to do something…. then…I am taking authority over it? Well…How extraordinary is my power!  If I refuse to allow you to do something….then…  But what happens if the very thing that I wish to accomplish is counterproductive because “I forbid?”

Be Careful

Take any situation and consider what the consequences could be if “You forbid.”  By simply exercising the action of forbidding, you have authority over the situation or person(s).  On whose authority, did you take such action?  Will you adjust and allow the Holy Spirit to govern? Will you allow the Holy Spirit to help you make the choices for today?

Consider the Scriptures

Consider the Scriptures of Matthew 19 and Matthew 22. Then children were brought to Jesus. They wanted Him to place His hands on them for a blessing and pray. The disciples reprimanded them.  But He said, “Leave the children alone. Do not forbid them from coming to Me. The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Do not allow the enemy to forbid you from having your victory!

The verses in Chapter 19 identify an example of forbidding that were counter-productive to what Jesus wanted. Jesus desired the willingness of people to freely come and accept him as Christ.

Laws of Nature Forbid

Today, you have the victory. God is not forbidding you to walk in His grace and mercy. Willingly, you have that right now.

As it was then, so it is in today’s society, humans seek to make laws to govern. There are the laws of nature and there are spiritual laws that govern. But there are NO laws of nature that man can devise that will rule above spiritual matters. You have the right to be well in Him.

Matthew 22: 37-40 says: And Jesus replied to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart. Love the Lord with all your soul. Love the Lord with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  The second is like it. ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ This means to unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others. The whole Law and the [writings of the] Prophets depend on these two commandments.” This is the free will for an abundant life. It is not just words.

Forbidding – A Personal Responsibility

Take actions now to walk in that abundance. Yes, desire to think on those things that will please the Father. Therefore, choose to pray that the actions that align with His will. Pray that your actions do not cause anyone to turn away from the Father. For God is Wisdom and Truth. Pray, “Open my eyes, Dear Lord, that I know your law. I trust you God, in the name of Jesus, that:

  • my actions will show mercy.  Obedience will please and honor You. 
  • my action(s) will be as a peacemaker not a peacebreaker; my actions will be guided by the Holy Spirit and not man’s ways.
  • I know You are able and willing to help any person who seeks You. If I really trust God, then my actions will be LOVE.
  • the Holy Spirit will speak on my behalf. I will bring others to You because of Your leading me.”
  • I now forbid any demonic forces to sabotage what You have for my family, friends, and me
  • .I am a servant of Yours.

    Understanding Transformative Servant Leadership

    Transformative Servant Leadership is too radical for most inspiring leaders, even in modern times. Without the Truth and acceptance of Godly principles, it is inconceivable for the human spirit. Transformative Servant Leadership operate under the concepts of God’s principles, the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22). In modern society, there is a form of this type of leadership. Realistically and truthfully, it is not even what most in ministerial leadership gravitate toward. Statistically, data supports this statement. In carrying out its principles, there must be a commitment to prioritize service over leadership authority (Mark 10:42–45). This calling is beyond what most leaders are willing to do. Giving a list of ten ways to transform people into God’s principles is not the answer. Transformative Servant Leadership is a matter of the heart. It is, however, in the business world, an important contrast.

    Traditional leadership is more about self-ambition, hierarchy, competition, tracking successes, and levels of authority. Most leaders and organizations continue to think and drive this style of leading, even while they speak about transformation.

    Greenleaf’s Foresight

    Among scientists, most researchers credit the Servant Leadership style to that of Robert K. Greenleaf (1904-1990). However, while his contributions did make an impact, my view of Transformative Servant Leadership is that Greenleaf had the ability and intuitiveness to identify biblical principles into a modern theory of acceptance for aspiring leaders.

    Quite often, in the natural (business, education, science, government, etc.) world, excitement for something new is always trendy until something else emerges to take its place. When it comes to variation of leadership styles i.e., authoritative, each can be scripturally found. However, Jesus, is the model of Transformative Servant Leadership. This is not to say that we should not try to move toward this model of better leadership in all areas of our lives. Why?

    Why Transformative Servant Leadership

    First, the word transformative, by definition, is about change. Second, the word servant, by definition, is about serving. Third, the word leadership, by definition, prioritizes guidance. Together, the philosophy of Transformative Servant Leadership is the continuity of change for serving and guidance beyond self. In contrast to other leadership models, the primary goal is to serve others with humility. That is a higher standard than any human can achieve without true guidance.

    Transformative Servant Leadership model advocates “Grace.” The same grace that is given to you must be afforded to others. Therefore, to describe oneself as a Transformative Servant Leader is to wrestle with the weight of suffering, challengers, and victories under the free gift of GRACE.

    Inspiring Stories of Transformation

    Traditional leadership was my foundation in the business world; it was useful, in that roles and assignments were clearly defining. Even in education, as a leader, although I was providing a great service, leadership was still a more traditional in style. However, my most humbling experiences stem from learning the principles baked into Transformative Servant Leadership.

    In fact, any story that I have about prosperity is because of grace. No silver or gold could buy what God did in transforming me. At the appropriate time, I will share more about the merciful Father who continues to give me more than I deserve. But for now, I share that those experiences of grace are my testimonies and causes of my willingness in supporting others for transforming their relationship with God. Perfection is not a requirement for transforming as servant leaders. One of the most effective means of transformation in leadership is sharing your truth. Unfortunately, there are too many leaders who hide behind their “coat of arms.”

    The Role of Storytelling in Ministry

    The role of storytelling in ministry must be truthful and shared from our experiences. The most transformative servant leader that ever walked this earth is Jesus. What a powerful ministry to have of messages for faith and leadership! His transformative leadership is the one to model. Jesus’s art of storytelling is still a powerful one for witnessing and serving to the oppressed, to the foreigner, to the less fortunate, to the rich, and including to yourself.

    There are many examples of his storytelling to all types of people. He met people where they were and his stories were analogies not to impress anyone; but to give understanding. To the farmer, it was the parable of the farmer; to those who wish to divide, read the parable of the wheat and weeds and parable of the woman making bread and yeast (Matthew 13:18-23; Matthew 13:24; Matthew 13:33-35). In furtherance, his messages of ministry highlight the importance of sharing stories and giving grace to all. His type of engagement was the result of transformation in others to serve and elevate others, continuingly. Percept upon percept; line by line – it is a continuous operation. That is why we must support and encourage one another, another principle for growing.

    Encouraging Servant Leadership in Your Community

    No, I am offering a list of ten ways to transform. However, I am to encourage you to remember that fostering practical steps of Transformation Servant Leadership can shape a community. In your transformative walk as a servant leader, work with the Holy Spirit to build up and out. Yours, is to build leaders and witnesses for His glory. If we aspire to this type of leadership, then we will be instruments of transformation by exhibiting Christ-like behaviors that pleases the Creator. We are not selectively teaching those we like or dislike. Thus, examine yourself to see if you are predominantly:

    • Building relationships or badgering for submissiveness
    • Harvesting or hindering
    • Hospitable or Hoarding (Matthew 25:37-40)
    • Blessing or persecuting (Matthews 5; the Beatitudes)
    • Creating or Misusing Opportunities for Transformation

    Thus, Transformative Servant Leadership, designed by God, is to be equipped by the Holy Spirit to do the work. Contrasting the world’s view, Transformative Servant Leadership was at the beginning of Creation, and it was expounded by leaders for God’s purpose (i.e., Moses, Joshua, Isaiah). In summary, the most powerful one was, of course, was Jesus. His leadership of obedience elevated people as communities of love and faith. Therefore, as joint heirs, ours is to be a continuation of serving others for transforming lives that leads to eternity.

    Defining Servant Leadership

    Why should you understand the role of Servant Leadership in Modern Times? The reason is that in servant leadership, it is not “your will” but it is “God’s will” that you are to carry out. Without this understanding, you will neglect what it truly means when it comes to the role of Servant Leadership of modern times. You must know is that a true servant leader carries out Godly principles with love and grace that stems from Christ-like behaviors (Galatians 5:22). For ministering disciplines of God, this is more than the worldview of a servant leadership role. However, because you are in this world, it is given to you the signs of the times and have the revelation knowledge of its view and be able to recognize and enact the spiritual components that is your calling. Thus, what is the role of servant leadership in modern times?

    First, let us recognize that spiritual components define the principles of servant leadership. There are many organizations which are attempting to use these principles to serve their clients; not the other way around. Second, these core principles which they wish to operate are the scriptural basis of the greatest two commandments of Matthew 22:36-40. Third, with this scriptural definition, you have a uniform definition of what is servant leadership. Without this as a root principle, you would be tempted to rely mostly on world leadership in measuring and living servant leadership by their concepts, ideology or standards.

    Key Principles of Servant Leadership

    Scripturally, you now see that the essential principle that guides the role of servant leadership is love. One of the tragedies of organizational leadership and ministry leadership is “false love.’ That is, well-meaning leaders fail to operate from a place of acceptance to draw others for serving, Moreover the premise is, ” I cannot allow you in your differences from me. Your ways and thoughts are not like mine.”

    Unfortunately, it is even difficult for some people to have a conversation or give a kind word to people who are of different beliefs, culture, and ethnicity. In this way, ministry leaders become like world organizations that they sometimes criticize. Notably, data shows that organizations differ in the way they define and implement the servant leadership model just as ministry leaders. What then are we to do? As previously stated, scripturally, servant leadership is defined by two great commandments. Godly love is its foundation.

    Other Guiding Principles

    Coupled with this type of love, a natural outcome is the gift of empathy and listening. This means that any principle, person, or otherwise ideology that divides and drive people away from the biblical meaning of servant leadership, is flawed. That can be difficult to accept in these modern times.

    Jesus is the model for empathy and listening as a servant leadership. His was to operate from a place of acceptance in love (1 John 4:19). By comparison, how can it be any other way for the role of servant leadership?

    Benefits of Servant Leadership in Organizations

    Is it possible to adopt a servant leadership approach that can improve relations, i.e., team, communities, groups? Yes. However, only if you, as a leader, is willing to carry out this leadership style of love and serving others first – the two greatest commandments. Fortunately, we have Jesus as our model. Jesus often criticized religious leaders about their leadership styles. Their insensitivity, lack of compassion, hypocrisy, greed, self-pride, and lusts corrupted the organizations that they lead. Unfortunately, there is very little evidence in these narrative stories that they turned from this type of leadership.

    Servant leadership can promote social responsibility within a community. As a leader, Jesus modeled this behavior. Yes, there were those who tried to provoke him with their questions. They sought to set traps. However, as a servant leader, his goal was always to lift up the community in obedience to the will of His Father. It was never to prevent others from entering; therefore, his leadership was in love.

    Implementing Servant Leadership Practices

    Hence, a servant leader must demonstrate social responsibility through acceptance of others within the community in which you are called to serve. So, how does one take actionable steps as a leader to adopt servant leadership methods? Here are four simple things you can do to implement servant leadership practices:

    • Respect and remember who the CEO is. It is God who knows the heart of every individual.
    • Recall that it is “His will” that must be done, not yours. He is the One who has 360 degrees vision.
    • Examine the potential of your actions. Acknowledge if you are driven more by your personal motive, ideology, or opinion.
    • Be an ambassador for healthy relationships. Ask yourself, “Am I a light that build healthy relations within the community?”

    Finally, in this modern time, some of the most critical ways that people turn others away from the Kingdom is through ideology, criticism and social biases. Choosing to have “NO COMMENT” works. In these times, our call is spiritual milk (1 Peter 2:2). You do not have to respond to written or verbal comments, i.e., social media and messages that does not lift the body of Christ. Be willing to deny yourself of actions (responses) that push others further away from the love that God wants from us. (John 8:6-11)

    The Importance of Prayer in Daily Life: How to Incorporate It Effectively

    Understanding the Importance of Prayer

    The words out of your mouth are powerful! Prayer is the acknowledgement of God as the Supreme and Sovereign Father. To pray is worship. We exist because of the Creator. Nothing was made without Him. Therefore, to acknowledge Him in prayer, is to recognize this. We communicate with God through prayer. Notice, the word “with.” Two-factor verification! For the Word of God calls upon us to pray without ceasing. Prayer without ceasing means the recognition of our continual dependence upon God. To ignore prayer is to ignore the quality and dependence of our life.

    Common Obstacles to Daily Prayer

    People often cite busyness as a challenge of daily prayer. Truthfully, there is too much happening around you to not pray! In teaching about prayer, Jesus’s prayer (Matthew 6:12) reflects the believer’s desire to avoid the dangers of trespasses (sin). Some people affirm that their teaching is another challenge to a regular prayer life. For example, once you pray and ask something of God, let it be. However, Matthrew 7:7-8 scripture, reminds us that the Heavenly Father does not mind a consistency in our requests. God does not tire; man does. Another challenge to a strong prayer life is unbelief in the power of prayer.

    A 2025 survey conducted by Strategic Renewal is that of the “State of Prayer.” This survey of more than 2000 pastors and church leaders found that there is a disconnect when it comes to prayer and leadership. Quoted in this article,

    64% of pastors express heart-level conviction about gathering their people to pray, two out of three pastors (67%) describe prayer as “not important” to the core of their ministry.

    The program’s findings do logically suggest that if leadership discounts regular prayer life, then those who they lead is apt to do the same.

    Prayer is a command of God; it is a gift of God. It is God’s instruction for believers to accomplish his tasks (God’s will) in earth. Prayer can appeal to God’s compassion. For example, the word “repent” means “sorrow” or “to bring comfort.” In prayer, humans can access God’s compassion. As believers, we can offer our prayers to change or intervene in God’s consequences. In Jeremiah 18:8, we see this concept at work. “And if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned.” God deals with evil and good; disobedience and obedience. There are consequences of each. While we cannot change God’s mind, we can ask for His comfort and curb the consequences of our actions (Job 1:4).

    Practical Tips for Incorporating Prayer into Your Routine

    Throughout the day, we can incorporate prayer into our daily routine. At the start of the day, we can thank God and ask for his guidance and protection in all that we do in this day (our daily bread). Pray over our meals. Give thanks. Acknowledge His presence with simple statements from the Word of God. For instance, “Thank you Heavenly Father, for protecting my family.” “Thank you, God, for your Holy Spirit guiding and teaching me right now.” God looks at the sincerity of the heart not at the number of times or how long you pray.

    Today, we are blessed to have bible apps as one of the helpful tools for incorporating prayer into our routines and building consistency. However, God enjoys hearing your words. Yes, for over twenty years, I have a special covenant group of prayer partners. They are special encouragers. Perhaps, you may want to join a prayer circle of believers who are willing to covenant (agree) pray consistently with you. Check out our prayers on this website which are always available. Still, remember, God wants to hear your voice speaking His Word. He wants to speak into your ears.

    I, also, enjoy prayer journals. One of my favorite things that you may enjoy is writing to God. Sometimes, I only scribble a word or two to express my emotions; date it. Sometimes, I simplify draw. Other times, I just have that cup of coffee and say, “God, I am here listening for you.”

    The Impact of Prayer on Spiritual Wellness

    It is the consistency of prayer that contributes to overall spiritual health. It brings a consistency in calming the emotions by invoking good thoughts toward Him releases anxiety. Positively speak back what the Word says, i.e., Psalm 23; Psalm 91. The visualization of God as the comforter and CEO is affirmation of your faith.
