Understanding the Connection Between Prayer and Wellness
Yes, prayer is a powerful tool in wellness. Do you sometimes shout as if God is deaf? Other times, speak in a whisper. And what about those unspoken words uttered within the mind? God knows the heart of the prayer. Prayer is a mighty weapon commanded by the Creator. Yes, I speak from personal experience.
One of the most important things that you must do in this life for success is to have a prayer life. Yes, I make this statement from personal experience. This blog post is not to beef up those who identify as skilled prayer warriors. Rather, it is to encourage the everyday warrior to use the power of prayer daily. In as much, there is more and more scientific evidence about the connection of prayer to wellness, why not engage! Thus, is our purpose to develop an understanding of this connection between prayer and wellness to impact the way you operate in the physical and spiritual realms (world). Yours is a paramount decision for movement toward what God says who you are and what you can have.
Why the Tool
First, there is no doubt that God wants you to be a success (defined by Him). Secondly, God’s plans for each of us are uniquely designed. The blueprint is known by him. So, why not ask him to reveal and direct you in carrying out the plan? Thirdly, the plan exists for the Kingdom of God. Why? He wants you to have everlasting wellness with Him.
The agenda of God is to bring everything, His creation, in alignment to His will. To do this, God’s wellness plan consists of prayer.Prayer is the tool of working out the knowledge and will of God in our lives (Luke 11:13).
There are many examples of healing in scriptures. But there are even more examples of healing, in this season, because of the Word of God spoken in faith. Exercising this type of faith and prayer for wellness is a continual experience. By example, I am learning the importance of how the words spoken out of my mouth must align with the Word of God. Psalm 91:11-12 is a personal reminder that I have angels to keep me from falling.
Mine is to speak this Word continuingly, consciously and intentional. Even in situations when others speak something that is contrary to my prayers, I declare it not so. For example, recently a technician told me that she saw metal in my stomach during an examination. Prior to the tests, I had already prayed that morning before the lab visit. So, when she openly said that I immediately lifted up another prayer to counter-act her words. A follow-up exam showed no metal!
As to time, there are several experiences that I can give where God immediately answered my prayer. Then, there are other experiences that it took more than a decade for my prayer requests to come to fruition. Just “Don’t quit.” You are a participant in the role of prayer and wellness.
Building a Prayer Routine for Enhanced Wellness
No one has the magic answer as to when healing or prayer requests will take place (instantly or over time) because we are each unique to God. What He wants is our faith in Him and obedience. Every day, He wants communication with us. Every day, He gives us new mercy. So, every day, be accepting of the grace that He gives. Do not “veer off the road” when the signpost says, “Just ahead, you will arrive.”
As previously noted, science is now verifying the connection between the role of prayer and wellness. Recent studies show that prayer in the faith-community is not bound by culture nor region. For instance, in older adults, studies indicate that the routine practice of prayer is related to cognitive protection of the brain (Is prayer protecting the brain? Dr. Neal K. Shah). In addition, research about the practice of routine prayer contributes to a sense of focus, calmness, and emotional balance. Comparatively, there is a continuation of studies as to prayer and the treatment of mental disorders by Harvard from its Neuroscience of Spirituality Study.
Communities and Support Systems in Prayer for Wellness
Chiefly, the role of community and personal prayer supports wellness. The manifestation of healing in the physical body is a testimony of the power and grace of God. But God’s grace is more than that. It is the working of His power that He has given to us. To say that by his (Jesus’) stripes we are healed but refuse to walk in obedience is contrary to what God wants for us. God wants to deliver us from the power of darkness (enemy). His ultimate desire is our everlasting healing in mind, body and spirit.
As a body of Christ, we are a community – a great support system. As a community, we are to develop the principles of God through prayer. Speak the Word of Truth in our situations for wellness. We are to prosper and be in good health as our soul prospers (3 John 2). Yes, through prayer, each one of us can exercise the Word in faith and put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the LORD our God fights for us; just as he has promised.one person can chase away two thousand and (Deuteronomy 32:30-31; Joshua 23:10). As prayer groups and community, we chase even more of the enemy. Obedience and prayer work in our favor. The Holy Spirit is present to guide, teach, and guide us in warfare. Finally, Psalm 91 says, “They will call upon Me, and I will answer them and deliver them (Psalm 91:14-15).”

Revisiting my journey today: Reflecting and Grateful June 22, 2026 – Over Twenty-five years ago – My Good Friday
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes
“Though I am Jewish, I believe in Jesus Christ and His healing.” Those were the words spoken to me on that particular Good Friday by the attending Radiologist/MRI Technician. I wish I could tell you that I remember his name – I do not. I can say that he was young and medium-built. The circumstances under which that young man spoke these words were over 25 years ago. Since that time, Good Friday has meant a time of personal thanksgiving. What exactly took place, you may wonder?
Breast Tumors
Two weeks prior to that moment, the doctor had informed me about a tumor in my breast. This is a scary time, especially since I had gone through breast surgery only a few years before. You really do not know all the facts until after follow-up labs and/or surgery. So, during those two weeks, I was filled with thoughts about non-invasive, invasive, and metastatic breast cancers. I read and reread materials, preparing myself for the upcoming surgery. My first breast surgery was complicated by infection and recovery took longer. Privately, I reached out to a couple of friends in prayer.
I made all the necessary preparations at the hospital as required. Surgery was scheduled for a Monday (the Monday after Easter Sunday). That Friday, I was there to finalize paperwork. While in the office, I was informed that they could take the final X-Ray/MRI prior to surgery in the doctor’s office.
Fridays was day-off for the regular radiologist (a female); therefore, it would be a different radiologist (male) today. I really did not like the fact that I was to see a male radiologist. Still, I ignored my personal wishes and decided to be cooperative.
You are a Stranger to Me – Healing is Here
When I entered the room, the male radiologist followed behind. We exchanged the usual “Hello, how are you?” Before stepping out of the room so I could prepare for the MRI, he asked me, “Do you believe in the healing of Jesus Christ?” I said, “Yes, I believe in Jesus.” He asked again, “Do you believe in the healing of Jesus Christ?” This time I paid more attention to his words because of the way he said it. “Yes, I do,” I replied. He answered back with, “Just remember, the type of surgery – it is only skin.”
I thought,He is a man; he would say that.
He left the room and returned a short time later. I must be honest that this young man made me feel uneasy, because he was not saying anything as he went about the testing process. It seemed like an eternity, although it was not, before he said, “All done.”
The Waiting
When I came out of the room, he said to me, “Sit here, please.” At this point, I thought, he is new; after lab work and MRI, I am suppose to “check-out” not “check-in.” Still, being cooperative, I sat in the chair. In about twenty minutes, the doctor and that radiologist appeared together. They walked over to a section of the outer room area; it was obvious they were peering over some film(s). I am thinking, “How much longer do I need to wait for the doctor?” Finally, he walked over to my chair and asked me to accompany him to that same area.
Physician Confirms Healing
The physician from began his conversation while displaying one film and then another film. “This is your X-ray imaging three weeks ago. This is your X-ray/MRI today.” When he realized that I was not understanding, he pointed to a much rounder shape in the first X-ray imaging of the tissue. Clearly, in this film we see the tumor in this area. In this film today, there is a cloudy appearance. “The tumor seems to have dissolved. You do not need the surgery.” At this point, he stated that sometimes things like this happen, and it was good that we took the X-ray/MRI in the office today instead of Monday… etc. However, all I cared about was that I had a tumor and now you do not see it!
Thank You – Not for Me – But for Your Healer
I remember walking back to that seat and thanking Jesus under my breath. I sat quietly when that young man came out of another room and approached me. He said, “I know you were afraid and wondered why I asked you if you believed in the healing of Jesus Christ. I do not ask all patients this question. God must tell me. There is a difference in believing in his healing. I am Jewish and I believe in Jesus and his healing. And by the way, the reason that I was not talking to you while I was administering the test, it was because I was led to pray; I was praying for you.”
I was so flabbergasted! I opened my mouth to say, “Thank you,” when he interrupted and said, “No, just keep thanking the healer.”
Compassion and Resurrection
What compassion this stranger had! Passion Week is a time of reflection of all the events leading up to Easter Sunday – Resurrection Day. I am thankful for Jesus and His works; but it was on a Good Friday that Jesus healed me. I leaped joyously out of that doctor’s office! For those who were in prayer for me, I happily shared this personal experience. Indeed, I had no idea of what was about to happen on that day. This is the first time I have ever shared my story in such a format as this. I do it now in this moment. Perhaps, there is a need to witness openly to you or someone that you know. Maybe, there is a need for such a personal encounter that is beyond what you see, think or believe. I know that was what I received.

Broken pieces? You made it to shore! Because of your faith in God, you chose to stand and fight through the circumstances. Others saw it and were encouraged by your faith. Tears! Challenges! Yes! But you are here as a reflection of the milestones and victories.
When the Lord Chose You
The One who chose you is still greater than any challenge. His faithful love endures forever. For every mountain, He brought you over it. He brought you out of your “Egypt” with a strong and powerful arm. Continue to lean on that arm in days and weeks to come. God is not weak. You are a branch of His. Even if you weep, He wants to lead you beside the still waters. You will sign those songs of triumph. You will testify when the enemy came in like a flood, God raised up a standard against him. He chose you to do a great work through Him for His purpose – to bring others to believe in Truth.
Compassion
God has compassion for His servants – those who put their trust in Him will never be shamed. The One who created you, did a good thing. Why would He not rescue the ones He loves! God put purpose in you. Every ability you have is His. Each day, He gives you a compassionate gift of mercy. The same God who causes the birds to sing without your help, will cause you to leap with joy that this world does not give. He does this because of the faith you have in Him. His compassion is like no one else.
Endurance
Servant leader, your race is one of endurance. You go over hills; through valleys; and climb up for a better view. It is this journey of endurance that brings you a testimony of faith. Yours is to hear God say at the end of your journey, “You have been a good and faithful servant. Enter in for your greatest reward – eternal life. Along the way, it is your purpose to lead others to a place of hope in Him.
Remember, His faithful love endures forever. He loves you
I am a Servant of His
God did not give you a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). That is why you, His servant, came through. What a testimony of power and love! You have a sound-mind. The Holy Spirit provides you with strength and discernment.
When Paul wrote 2 Timothy, he was in a jail cell. Yet, the jail cell did not spiritually confine him. The attributes that you have comes from the divine Father. His children have a bold Spirit. Yes, your testimony is, “I am a Servant of God, and my trust is in Him who cannot fail.”
Today, you will not be afraid to prophesy to your dry bones. “I declare that God will breathe life into “dead” situations for my growth in Him. He is the Lord of my life (Ezekiel 37:5-6).” He is the only true God and a safe space for you.
Blessings for healthy seasons of mind, body and spirit (1 Thess 5:23). You are well.
While we do not endorse others (disclaimer), we share other blogs of encouragement and wellness for the mind, heart and spirit. God uses His people’ abilities to support His kingdom.
Faith and fighting – Another loss, another tragedy, another challenge. Yes, I understand when life seems to tear at your heart, it seems that the death angel is knocking at your door. Thus, how can you stand when you really want to throw the towel in the ring? First of all, more than you or I can count, this is the mindset of many during trouble. When the world around you becomes so impoverished, troublesome, and sorrowful, they wish to give up. But today, I say, “Do not give up.” Fighting for strength is a movement toward your victory. Call out, “Lord, help.”
“Calm the Storm”
Calm the storm. Bring it to a whisper. Still the waves. Peace be still! Your wish is for darkness of the night? Yes, in that space, you feel hidden from the world. Thoughts of despair bring you more misery. That is because that is the purpose of darkness. It is to occupy the mindset in stillness! To cause you immobility. On the other hand, it is only temporary. Joy can come in your morning. It takes a move, one step at a time. Within hours, physically, night turns into another day that you must encounter. You awake to take breaths again. Breathe in and exhale this moment.
Healing Brokenness
Today, right now, I speak a space where the brokenness can heal. There is only one who can change your rivers, your storms into dry places. Let Him in. The dry places can then turn into fields of springs that nourish the soul. You are worth it to Him. God wants your cause (wastelands) to become fruitful places. Yes, you need His strength to fight the storm and change course of the winds. You are in a test of trust!
Tested Character in a Fight
Tests are not meant to make you feel great. Tests are stressful. They are evasive. Perhaps, an intrusion for you. Your coach is one who is very familiar with tests; in fact, He designed them for our growth. What now?
In a fight, it is about character. While physical strength is important in the natural world, it is character that gives victory. As an example, Gideon, is one who lived in a time of oppression of his people (Judges 6). Gideon did not choose this battle. Like Jonah, it was God’s choosing of a human for God’s glory. “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” Those were the words of God’s angel to Gideon (verse 12).
If You Are God
Gideon wanted proof that this was God’s assignment for his life. In fact, he asked, if the Lord is with us, then why are we going through these troubles? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, He is a deliverer of the people.
Imagine the shock to Gideon. Here in a place, hiding out, as not to be seen, yet Gideon is an answer to Israel’s plight. Why Gideon? Why not Gideon? More pointedly, God’s choice is His to make because all creation is His.
Where’s the Beef?
Do you remember that popular beef commercial – Where’s the beef? Gideon asked God to show him signs of this calling. Afterall, a wise person does not enter into battle without considering the cost. Contrast, the character of Jonah (Jonah 1) and Gideon about God’s assignment. Because of individuality, their responses to God’s assignment did differ. Jonah’s response landed him in the belly of a great fish. Whereas Gideon’s was a request of show me “the beef.” Show me that You are with me.
“Fight for me in the storm, Dear God. Lord, help.”
God already knows your emotions. You cannot hide what you feel from Him. Oppression, sorrow, trouble, and uncontrollable events are a part of life. You do not always feel strong, bold, and beautiful. Events can rock your world. God’s faithfulness is far above the clouds. Like Gideon, you have questions. I pray that God lift you out of your storm and His glory make you shine. Is this what you desire?

It is time for dinner! Learning how to create safe spaces in your environment can begin at the dinner table. With the decline of everyday family mealtime, it has to be an intentional setting to bring people together. Are you willing to create a safe space for family or friends? Is it time to recreate a safe space at a dinner table?
For a few minutes, let us revisit a previous blog conversation about safe spaces (July 17, 2021; My Own Safe Space – For Real). Since that time, I have evolved in my thinking. I find that there is a connection to safe spaces and journaling. First, embrace the ideal of journaling as part of one’s wellness/mental health program. In the beginning, the purpose of my journaling was to share thoughts with my grandsons. It was a safe space to share with them. As life brings changes, so does the purpose for journaling. Journaling can be a useful tool for distressing and reflecting because it is intentional writing.
What is the Connection between Journaling and Safe Spaces?
Research shows that journaling clearly increases goal achievement, improves mental health, enhances creativity, and encourages greater self-awareness. So, let’s talk at the dinner table with those same initiatives in mind. Gather your group and “Set the Dinner-Table.” Your family or friends deserve that quiet time for a safe space of sharing.
Let’s start with examples of open-ended questions (who, what, where, when, why, and how).
The Magic of Open-Ended Questions
Visualize your setting. Each place setting is tailored to your guests. Draw their attention to a crafted journal. Toast them with questions that draw attention to positive or negative events; help each person to understand root causes of hidden trauma or challenges; encourage; build trust among this group; provide a safe space for listening and sincere care. Celebrate your progress.
Here is a guide for each type of question:
Elicit insight into relationship(s) (The Who)
Lead/identify facts (The What)
Enable discussion about the place/environment (The Where)
Bring about the timing of a problem, including what happened, immediately before and after it (The When)
Identify reasons/causes (The Why)
Enable a person to talk about feelings and/or processes (The How)
The Journal for the Next Table Setting
Give your group a strategy for the next dinner: Here is the journal item that Melissa’s set for our family session.
REAL – Our Strategy (given from Melissa)
R – You are relevant; I promise to show up and be present for your growth and greatness.
E – Empathy; I will make every effort to show empathy to help you through your situation.
A – Apologize; I apologize for making you feel unsafe that you could not come to me.
L – Listening; I promise to practice active listening to learn; I want you to be heard.
Do not quit before truly starting.
