Wellness Episode 1: The Link Between Spiritual Wellness and Mental Health

Pip: If you have ever wondered whether your soul and your psyche are on speaking terms, bulluckg.com has been doing the work of answering that question — and the answer is more practical than you might expect.

Mara: This episode follows one through-line: how spiritual wellness and mental health reinforce each other, and what that looks like as a daily practice. Let’s start with the connection itself.

Mara: The central question here is whether spiritual health and mental health are actually the same conversation — or just neighbors who occasionally wave at each other across the fence.

Pip: The post opens with a grounding from Apostle John, and the framing is specific: “Dear Friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

Mara: So the upshot is that wholeness — body, mind, soul — is treated here not as a metaphor but as a single integrated condition. The soul’s health is not separate from the health you can measure.

Pip: The post gets practical fast. It introduces discernment as the mechanism — the capacity to perceive what is not immediately apparent — and ties it directly to daily decision-making. Every choice either enhances or endangers mental wellness.

Mara: And the Holy Spirit is named as the facilitator of that discernment. The post is direct: if you choose not to use that resource, negative emotions follow, and that is costly to mental wellness.

Pip: There is also a useful reframe on the adversarial side. Satan cannot read your thoughts — he is not omniscient — but he targets joy through the pattern of your thinking. So the corrective is Philippians 4:8: think on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable.

Practical and Spiritual

Mara: The post then lists practical strategies drawn from 1 Thessalonians 5 — rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in everything, hold fast to what is good. The note on prayer is clarifying: it simply means recognizing that God is actively present in your thoughts and actions.

Pip: The list is demanding, and the post acknowledges that openly. A fallible people cannot do infallible things — which is precisely why grace and mercy exist.

Mara: The closing counsel is simple: start your day with God, end it with Him, and let that rhythm sharpen both you and the people around you. Iron sharpens iron.

Pip: Daily rhythm as spiritual infrastructure. That carries straight into how we lead.

Mara: Spiritual wellness is not a soft add-on to mental health — it is load-bearing.

Pip: Start with God, end with God, and apparently the middle takes care of itself a little better. More to come.

Somedays – It’s Just About Music

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Music is part of our mental health as never before. Beyond conversations with God, today is one of the those days that only music seems to soothe the soul.

I was a caregiver. Even today, there is nothing that I can compare with taking care of my Mom. February 23, 2021, she fell in love with instrumental gospel jazz. On that day, I wrote the following:

February 23, 2021

,Some days, the stress can get to you. Not only is it stressful for me, but it is more stressful for my Mom.” Relying upon others for basic care is frustrating for her. It makes her angry. Lately, she has not been able to take an afternoon ride with me. Sightseeing! I miss it too.

It has been one year since she has been outdoors. For decades, my Mom loved singing in the choirs. So, it is not surprising that music still delights her. Still, there are times that nothing seems to work. BUT TODAY….February 23, 2021….. she “fell into jazz.”

She wasn’t a jazz lover before. She loved gospel music more than any other. But today, the sounds of Jazz is calming to her soul. She closed her eyes and listened for two hours!!!

Dad and Mom#2 Left Us Too

Just a year and half ago, Dad took his journey also. When my father was dying, my brother dealing with his own ordeal, would play my podcast for him in the late nights. He said hearing my voice soothed our Dad; especially Gardenia’s Garden Podcast Episode #6 Morning Glory. It gave him the sense that I was in the room. I guess that is what music can do. Give a voice to the voiceless. Within two years, three parents took their heavenly flight.

Consider the words of Apostle John, who at the end of his life, wrote: “Dear Friend  I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.  I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth (3 John 2-4).”

The Impact of Mental Health on Spiritual Wellness

Practical Tips for Cultivating Both Areas

What are some ways to integrate spiritual practices into our daily routine for mental wellness? Medically, the American Psychological Association documents the benefits and connection of spiritual wellness in therapy. Although there are mental health professionals who dismiss people’s faith in healing, the research validates traditions of those who believe in God’s higher power. Spiritual practices among the faith community include mediation, prayer and community involvement as personal tools of spiritual wellness and mental health.

  • Be patient with all
  • Uphold the weak
  • Rejoice always
  • Pray without ceasing – (Which simply means that you recognize that God is with us. In our thoughts and actions, He is actively available through the Holy Spirit in our thoughts and actions.)
  • In everything, give thanks
  • Do not quench the Spirit
  • Do not despise prophecies
  • Do not render evil for evil
  • Hold fast what is good
  • Abstain from every form of evil
  • Always pursue what is good

Conclusion: Achieving Holistic Well-Being
